Password protected BSW files
I am an old-tim e Apple hacker who has recently acquired an Apple ][+.
The only relics I have saved from my Apple heyday are a DOS 3.3 boot
disk and three data disks from Bank Street Writer and Appleworks. The
disks contain stories/poems/whatnot and I am eager to remind myself
what a fool I was back then. I understand I have no hope of reading
the Appleworks disk without ProDOS, and currently that is on hold. But
the Bank Street disks can be read from DOS. The problem is that I
password protected them when I saved them.
Being at one time capable in Apple tricks, I know that BSW either
precedes or appends the password to the file name in extended
characters. I used to remember a poke or two to display these
characters when doing a catalog. They would appear in inverse. Now, I
do remember the password (amazingly), but I don't know where to stick
these extended characters or even if it's possible. I whipped up a
BASIC program to prompt for a filename and password, then it would
shift the characters of the password and append it to the file name and
attempt to bload it into memory, which I could then Peek and display.
I think I'm missing some piece of the puzzle, and I'm looking for input
from anyone else who used to know these tricks. Anyone remember the
poke to display hidden characters in the catalog? Anyone know how the
password is shifted? I guessed 128 characters, but it didn't work.
I'm going to keep hacking away at it, but I forgot how horrible the ][+
keyboard layout is. It's driving me crazy!!
Thanks for any input!!
