Bev - It's a DeskJet 697c connected to a Grappler+.

The reason I was asking about diagnostics is because the only time I'd ever
encountered a DJ problem similar to the current problem...the cause was a
bad cable.

No matter what Grappler dip switch settings, and it sounds like the
gentleman tried every possible combo, he reports "The printer is out of
paper" error messages. 

I'm almost sure that there's a hardware problem, but am having a very
difficult time convincing the gentleman with the problem that the used
Grappler he purchased without a warranty might have arrived DOA, or that 
the cable might be bad.

This problem has taken up so much of my time, I'd be willing to buy a $10
Grappler (or barter for one with a SSII product) just so I could put this to
rest. Anyone got one?
