For some reason, I seem to recall that the pinout on the Mac serial port is
different than that of a IIgs, and possibly different vintages of Macs (Mac SE
vs. Mac G3) behave differently as well.
At any rate, according to the Apple IIgs Hardware Reference, here's the pinout
for the serial port (view with a monospaced font):

4 GND - Ground reference and supply

8 RX DATA+ - Receive Data+
