According to the WDC web site, they license companies to
produce large quantities of their chips for embedded applications
but they only do this if the company is going to make a LARGE
number of chips.

For company aiming to sell to a small market like CMD to the
C64/C128 market, WDC makes the chips.  Same for IIGS users.
We must buy directly from WDC.  Alltech does not seem to be
retailing them anymore either although when they did, they also
bought the chips from WDC.
