Most likely your horizontal output transistor blew and is shorting out the
power supply. The power supply detects the short and shuts down, then tries
again, over and over. That cycling is causing the noise you hear. Sometimes
you can replace the HOT and be OK, or there may be another problem, commonly
a defective electrolytic capacitor, that is causing the HOT to blow.
I'd suggest picking up another monitor. Good sources are computer recycling
outfits, schools that are getting rid of their Apple II's, and thrift
stores. I'm in the San Francisco area, and I see IIgs RGB monitors all the
time. The Magnavox monitors are less common, but I see them too. They go for
$15, tops. Or look for a IIgs system with a monitor you want. I've bought
whole systems at garage sales just to get some piece I wanted.
