Your IIGS jack may be damaged.  Mine works fine with walkman
type headphones and with my amplified speakers.  Also, it is
a standard stereo plug even though the output of both channels
have been rendered identical.  Thus, if you try to use a set of
mono headphones with this port, you would short out something.

Apple really goofed when they did this.  The chip supports eight
channel sound!
