IIgs monitor?

I was recently given an AppleColor High Resolution Monitor by a friend
who said it works on IIgs's--Using my IIgs's monitor cable, we
connected it to my IIgs, and got a VERY messed up version of what we
were supposed to see (it looked like a real bad refresh-rate
mismatch).  So we tried it on my Mac LC 475, also using my IIgs
monitor cable.  The monitor stayed black.

Is this monitor usable on the IIgs, or what?  Or is it just broken?
Does this monitor require a special cable?
