I imagine it would be the same reason that you can't format 1600K
floppies on an Apple II with a SuperDrive controller.

I'm just guessing here but I imagine that the SWIM in Macs and on the
SuperDrive controller probably don't allow GCR encoding/decoding with
high density media.
