But not if you want to run AppleTalk in a ROM 1 IIgs.  In this case, you
must set slot 7 to "AppleTalk", and put a hard drive elsewhere.

No, it is a ROM 1 (as stated in the original post).  This has to stay
set to Mouse.

I'd suggest ditching your 5.25" drive and putting the DuoDisk controller
in slot 6, changing the slot setting to Your Card.

Another option might be to connect the DuoDisk to the IIgs disk port
(daisy chained after the last 3.5" drive), but this may require
modifications to the drive.

Do not try to put the DuoDisk card in slots 1, 2 or 3, because the IIgs
has some compatibility issues with 5.25" drive controllers in these
slots: OK if the system speed is set to "Normal" or with a IIgs-aware
driver, such as GS/OS's one, but it won't work if the system speed is
set to "Fast".

Incidentally: are you rebooting after changing slot assignments?  These
are one of the few Control Panel settings which do not take effect until
you next boot the machine.

I agree.  I'd suggest putting the printer(s) on the printer port,
setting slot 1 to Printer Port, moving the Focus card to slot 2, and
setting that slot to Your Card.  AppleTalk will then be connected to the
modem port.

I'll second that.

Watch out for the DuoDisk compatibility problems on the IIgs before
trying this.  I don't remember what the exact symptoms are, but I think
it included damaging the contents of a write protected disk.

I haven't looked up the details recently, but I remember it was covered
in Open-Apple/A2-Central many years ago.
