This user should not have to use text mode. iMacs come
with Macintosh AppleWorks (formerly ClarisWorks). This
program imports Apple II AppleWorks format files. Up to
AppleWorks 3 at least. This answer comes from Apple.
Several months ago I helped a user with a similar problem.
He emailed me later to say that he called Apple and posed
the problem to them. Not only did Apple remember the
Apple II version of AppleWorks, they suggested a solution.
The Macintosh "version" of AppleWorks, they said, could
import Apple II AppleWorks files. So can the Windows
version, they said.
Of course I was surprised they have a Windows version of
AppleWorks. I know there was a Windows version of the
old ClarisWorks, but I thought for sure with Jobs back he
would have removed it. Instead, they continue to sell the
latest version of the software under the AppleWorks for
Windows label.
