You can turn a C64 'switcher' stick into an Apple II stick with three analog
positions per axis (e.g. using a scheme like the one described by Roger Johnstone).
This setup will work fine with some Apple II programs; but, the stick will be
useless for many other programs.

The problem you run into is that plenty of A2 software expects the joystick to
supply X:Y values over the full analog range. Paint utilities, point-and-shoot
games, and assorted driving and flight simulations are some examples.

A switcher stick supplies much less information than an analog stick. Even with
an adaptor which generates smoothly stepped analog outputs in the direction you
point, you would have just a fair simulation of a genuine analog stick.
