I'll have to go and dig through my archives to see if my memory is fading, 
but I seem to remember several people telling me that the setting for 
Switch 1 didn't matter.

In the meanwhile, since neither you nor I actually use a Grappler+ (I use
an AE Parallel Card)...yet there are many here who I'm sure use a
Grappler+ with a DeskJet...could a few of you who do have that hardware
combo take a look at your dip switch settings and let us know how you have
them set? 

If you do respond, could you also mention if you use AppleWorks Classic as
well as GS/OS? 

With input from others, we should be able to come up with the best answer
based on experience.
