As Perry said, no, the Mac LC Apple IIe card cannot be used as a stand
alone machine.
The Spartan is a large box that has the same colour as the original
C64 and 1702 monitor. It was designed to let you sit your 1702
monitor on top of the Spartan and plug the C64 into the front of the
Spartan.
Inside the box is a large motherboard with 8 Apple bus slots and an
Apple II+ style power supply. There is extra hardware on the
motherboard for dealing with the C64's cartridge port and such but I
don't have a manual for my Spartan so I've never quite figured out how
everything is supposed to work.
However, even with this motherboard, it appears to me that it is
mostly just a holding place for the slots as the CPU card that goes in
a slot by the power supply has the 6502, 64 KB of RAM, joystick
connector, keyboard connector, character generator ROM and two PLCC
chips from Mimic Systems (that I believe are the ROM and other
hardware support) on it.
I toyed with the idea years ago of trying to make my spare CPU card
into a portable II+ compatible but never got around to it.
One of these days I'll get around to taking some pictures of the
Spartan and get them on the web so everyone can see what this thing
was like.
