That and to free up your phone line in case you are expecting a call
or something.  Not everyone has moved up from dial-up access or have
multiple phone lines.  Heck, not everyone has unlimited time yet
either so offline readers are still very useful.

I have a cable modem now but I still get my news reader to connect to
my NNTP server, grab all the new messages in my subscribed groups and
disconnect because not leaving yourself connected to the server for a
long period of time can cause less stress on the NNTP server making it
a little more responsive for other users.
