You can get an Apple IIGS and have it transfer the
5.25 disks to PC media.  How much is that novel
worth to your friend?

Find a used Apple IIGS.  Then either get a used
PC Transporter card plus its software (an XT
emulator for the Apple II) to get the IIGS to write
to MS-DOS floppy disks.  The IIGS drive does
720k MS-DOS format in emulated XT mode.

The second option is to find an SCSI card for
your IIGS and hook up an Iomega Zip drive to it.
This will let the IIGS copy files from the 5.25
disks to your PC MS-DOS formatted Zip disks.

The last option is to look up a company called
///SHH Systeme on the web.  They are based
in Germany and make a card called the
BlueDisk.  The BlueDisk allows the IIGS to
read and write MS-DOS floppies using regular
PC drives (320k, 1.2M or 720k, 1.44M, and
2.88M) on your IIGS.
