Long file names are not a problem for the MS-DOS FST.  It will only
show you the short name version.

I had the same problem described by you and found that the problem is
with the volume label.

1) Make sure your MS-DOS disks has a volume label.
2) Make sure this label is 11 character or less.

It is also a good idea to full format of pre-formatted disks.  Most
pre-formatted disks use a 1:1 interleave whick makes reading these
disks on a Superdrive horribly slow.  Reformating uses a 2:1
interleave which is much better for the GS.
