Some of us have made modifications to and/or
expanded our IIGS units. Mine, for example, is
in a PC tower case and has a TWGS attached.
I would not like to make more MODs just to
swap in a new motherboard. Second, removing
and plugging in the TWGS to a new motherboard
will stress the cable. I can guarantee you that
the accelerator, which is currently still worth
over a hundred bucks, is not worth risking while
a battery worth less than $10 will do. Lastly,
some of us realize that the supply of IIGS units
will not last forever. Conservation of limited
resources is very important. ;-)
Besides, if you do find a ROM 3, you'd end up
getting a battery for it too. Why not save that
extra cost however little it is to you. A bit of
solder costs nothing! A ROM 3 plus a new
battery will cost more than just a battery for an
existing ROM 01.
