Re: Apple II Story

<< In April of this year management re-wired the building for ethernet.
The last terminal server in the building (the one my IIgs was using)
was removed. No ethernet card for the Apple IIgs meant I'd either
have to go back to a modem or give up using an Apple II as a terminal
to Unix. >>

At
http://www.grin.net/~cturley/gsezine/GS.WorldView/******Oct99/EThernet.Card/
there is a how-to on building your own Ethernet card for your IIgs. Here is
the text file portion.
      Jay      /|\/|||\\/|||//\/\///................@;

EthernetTwo "ET" card for Apple2 by Babar de Saint Cyr.

Archive name: ETshk.bin
This is a ShrinkIt file. Use GS-ShrinkIt to unshrink.

This archive includes:

ET.recto.jpg a jpeg photo of ET card viewable by jpeGS
ET.verso.jpg a jpeg photo of ET card viewable by jpeGS
schematics a standard GS 640 mode Apple Preferred image
file (may view with Platinum Paint, etc.).
readme a text file (you are reading it now)
snif a sniffer program for ET card with source

ET card is built around CS8900A Ethernet controler
(http://www.crystal.com).

Since this chip and peripheral componants are very hard to
find in France I used a kit sell by Gary
(http://www.vermontlife.com/gary/crystal.html).
Cost is $60 for a kit and $120 for a full assembled and
tested module.

It took me two hours to mount kit. Beginners MUST
choose assembled module ;-) Then I used a prototype Apple2
card to install kit , 74245 and 74139. Worked at first time!

To do:

a GSOS driver (including ARP management)
interrupt management
an hardware enhancement to follow Apple IRQ chain management
an hardware enhancement to bufferize address bus

Thanks to the three persons wich answer to me on
comp.sys.apple2.programmer:
Peter Schranz, David Empson and Jean Marie Friedt.
