CMS SCSI and ZIP -- IT WORKS!

Hi,
I recently picked up a gs with a ROM 1, 1 meg of RAM, and a CMS
SCSI card (for $7 :) Anyway, when I investigated using a Zip drive with
the CMS card I was disappointed because the FAQ said that there is no way
to get it to work. Well, I was able to get it to work! Maybe this is
common knowledge, and if it is I apologize, but I downloaded the latest
version of the CMS utility from http://www.allelec.com/aplfiles.htm.
Getting the Zip drive to work is kind of clumsy, but it works! Run the
CSM.SCSI.SYSTEM software, select your CSM card from the list of cards. If
your system is like mine, you will get an error recognizing the ZIP drive.
Have the system rescan the SCSI chain and it should find the ZIP drive
again. Go to the volume manager and you will see three partitions of 32
megs each. I don't remember having to save the partition information. At
any rate, you can now use the ZIP drive... until the next time you turn
off the system. You need to go through all of the above steps EXCEPT
going to the volume information each time you do a cold boot. Once you
have the Zip drive recognized, you can change the boot slot to 7 in the
control panel and warm boot from the Zip disk. I'm going to work on
getting the GS to recognize the Zip drive on cold boot, but I'm happy
nonetheless that I don't need to use the RAMdisk to download disk images
to my GS... Now I get to install System 6.0.1 tonight! Oh, by the way,
you can only access the first 2 partitions on the Zip drive, and the first
time you use the disk you need to format the partitions (not in the CMS
utility, but in either system 6.0.1 or something like Copy II plus).
