If the Mac is frying regular modems, the serial hardware
has probably been damaged.  Most likely cause is a
power surge through the phone line.  Lighting is one
such cause.

There have been Apple IIGS machines with serial ports
that fry modems too, for example, and they've been
damaged by lightning.
