I've kinda noticed that in what little printing I've done with it so far.
I've mostly sent it text from ShadowWrite, but it's produced output almost
as good as the DeskJet 682C that my clones use. Not bad at all for as old
as it is.

I've run side-by-side comparisons of both, each running at its top-quality
level. I wouldn't describe the print quality from an Epson as "much better"
than from an HP. At best, they're about even. Factor in the HP's faster
print speed and better reliability, and it's a no-brainer. DPI isn't
everything anymore.

The 8-bit apps I've used tend to only know about 9-pin printers. I think a
newer version of SuperFonts might've been released to go with AppleWorks 4.x
or 5.x and it might support a wider range of printers, but I still have the
AppleWorks 3.0 (on 5.25" floppies) that I bought ten years ago. I don't
remember if Publish-It! had support for any 24-pin printers. I don't think
it did. It did provide limited PCL support (but with print quality no
better than from a dot-matrix printer) and PostScript support (which is what
you used if you had access to a PostScript-compatible printer).
