Penman, normally I would never answer you, but here's the deal for the benefit
of those who are being misled.
Using an external SEG.ER doesn't just wipe your printers. It wipes ALL your
standard settings, from Preloading to margin settings to cursor blink rate to
spelling preferences to standard location of data disk. Do not copy an external
SEG.ER into AppleWorks 4 or 5 unless you want to set up all those settings
again. Not only will you wipe your settings, but (depending on whose SEG.ER you
use) you will install a DeskJet setup that is inferior to the one which is
already built into AppleWorks 4/5, ready to go.
I have never recommended that people use TimeOut Install DeskJet. You could
use it, as an option. Many better install programs have been written since,
including a newer version of Install DeskJet which does not wipe printers.
Install DeskJet is a macro which goes to the Printer menu and selects the
printer, just the same as you could do manually. It installs some special codes
too, which you may or may not like.
The REAL way to install a DeskJet printer is to select it from the Add a
printer menu, just the same as we've always done in AppleWorks. Nothing fancy,
it's the same as if you had an ImageWriter II, Epson, or Panasonic. Select it,
name the slot, and you're done.
Any DeskJet setup from the NAUG disk would be somebody's [homemade] custom
printer. There is no reason to use that when you can have John Link's
professional setup simply by selecting it right inside AppleWorks (you do NOT
need any macro to do this). John's driver enters init strings and codes which
are impossible to enter with any custom printer setup. There is no reason
whatsoever to use anything less than the best.
I haven't used Doug's program but from what I've heard, it takes your printers
from AppleWorks 3 and puts them into AppleWorks4/ 5. You would not want to do
that if your setup is a DeskJet. For AW 4/5 Randy Brandt added code to Link's
older setup, so if you transferred an old AppleWorks 3.0 DeskJet forward, EVEN
if it was John Link's, you would be using an inferior setup.
Select it from the Add a Printer menu. How hard is that?
