Practically any CD-ROM drive and an Apple High Speed SCSI
card or RamFAST card will work. Speed of CD-ROM also does
not matter. You don't HAVE to get a single speed model,
although double speed would probably be plenty fast since so
far no IIGS CD-ROM software uses streaming video/audio. A
single speed drive would probably seem a little slow-poke as
a data drive for the IIGS once you get used to the speed of a
IIGS hard drive. I recommend a 2x or 4x model.

The IIGS motherboard does not have an audio mixer, so you
can't pipe the CD-ROM audio through it. Instead, use external
amplified speakers, preferably with dual inputs. The dual inputs
can be used to connect both the CD-ROM and the IIGS at the
same time. One such model speakers is the Apple Design
speakers. These work great on the IIGS!

If not, do what I did. Go to Radio Shack. Ask for a two
channel stereo mixer. The mixer has dual stereo inputs
(4 RCA plugs, two for the first stereo source and two for
the second stereo source). The idea is to hook the IIGS
headphone port up to the first set of stereo inputs and the
CD-ROM up to the second set. Adjust volumes to balance.
Now the IIGS and the CD-ROM can play music and sound
through the same set of speakers.

Two channel stereo mixers are pretty cheap (there are
4 channel and 6 channel ones for pros).
