56k modems do max out at 56,000 bps. However, if you use MNP4/5 or v42(bis)
error correction and compression you can feed more bps into the serial port
on the modem than it feeds to the other modem via the telephone line.

Serial port speeds tend to follow the progression:

9600	19200	38400

and

115200	57600	38400

The former sequence is based on doubling 300bps while the latter is based
on integer divisors of the maximum speed an IBM PC style serial chip can
achieve (based on the standard crystal used). Once you reach 38400 you cannot
double the speed once more on a standard PC serial port.
