Just to clarify, you need not use DOS 3.3 to initialize the target
disks.  Any Apple
format from DOS 3.3, ProDOS, Pascal, or even CP/M will do as they all
use the same
underlying format. 

Your first message indicated that DSK2FILE was giving you a "4C" code. 
I don't have
my book handy but a quick check of the net indicates that 4C is the MLI
code for 
"unexpected end of file", so Rubywand is probably correct in saying your
disk image
files are not the proper length.  143,360 bytes or nothing.
