I'm not sure if this is the case in the US, but in Canada, and you have taken
at least one post secondary computer based program, you will be classified
as a computer professional and thus knows about copyright laws. As such,
you will be fined much more heavily if caught. If you work for a business that
uses pirated software, and you don't report them you can be fined. Even worse
you can be that businesses 'scapegoat', they can say you're the computer guy
and they don't know everything. They'll still be fined but you'll be hung out to
dry.
There is an organization to which you can report businesses or educational
institutions or anyone else that uses pirated software. The organization will
send a warning via mail, and can at any point after that send in an inspection
team.
