Try deactivating all control panels, DAs, INITs, and Finder Extensions
except Marinetti.  Test.  If it then works, add the extensions back one
by one.  Note any failures.  Remove those extensions.

Some extensions, like menu bar clocks, steal interrupt time and thus
muck up telecom stuff.  TCP/IP is very sensitive to this, I imagine.

You should probably deactivate even GUPP to start.
