A side note is that those people died because their car was hit by a drunk
driver going 70mph.
I'm not convinced gas tank placement made that much of a difference in
survivability and damage - with that kind of impact, you can break almost
anything.
The judge decided that the jury must not know about this, because knowing that
the tank had failed only under exceptional circumstances might change the
ruling.
