The way I heard this story (if it's the same story) was that he was asked
his own phone number, and made a similar reply.
Completely off topic:
At a dance I once saw a guy ask a girl for her phone number, and she told
him "it's in the phone book". He then asked for her last name. She said
"that's there too".
