Wasn't one of the problems related to DMA access? I remember reading something about the chip solution not being able to do DMA since it didn't have access to the signals present at the slots.

Most caching cards don't support DMA, but their speeds are high
enough doing programmed data transfers that it doesn't matter for
disk accesses.

Of course, if you want to run a coprocessor card that needs DMA,
that won't work.
