Well damages aside, there still is the issue of respect and permission. You may
note that in all newspaper and magazine publication always acknowledge
articles/photos that isn't original, with permission. It's only common courtesy
to ask for permission. That I believe is the core of the issue here.

I never read it myself, but if he is taking excerpts in part or whole of an
existing article in which permission wasn't granted, then he should have
researched, or perhaps attended the event and produced an original
article. I have nothing against Charles personage, but if he had posted
someone else's work without permission, I can understand why they'd be
upset.
As I said previously it's only polite to ask and the original author has the
rights to grant or refuse permission.
