Yes, but only if you limit yourself to ProDOS 8 operating system.
Since you use GS/OS, you can use the HFS file system as well
as the ProDOS file system. As a result, you can use partitions
up to 2GB in size using the HFS file system. As a Mac user, you
should be pretty familiar with HFS since that's the Mac's file
system until the advent of HFS+.
I use a 1GB hard drive on my IIGS with 4 partitions, 2 ProDOS
file system and 2 HFS file system partitions. Got about half
of it filled up, but I use the other two partitions as mirrors to
back up.

Check the FST folder in the System folder. You should have a
Pro.FST (ProDOS file system) and an HFS.FST (HFS file system).
If you are missing the HFS one, check the System Tools disks
until you find the HFS.FST. Install it and break that dreaded
32MB barrier. You'll also get more flexible filename rules with
HFS!

On the IIGS, the SCSI controller itself has an SCSI ID. My guess is that
the ID of the drive and the controller is the same. Change the SCSI ID
of the drive and your problem should go away. Good luck! Also, make
sure that the last drive (in this case, your only hard drive) is terminated.
