I was disturbed when the sysop/programmer of the A2 BBS T.I.E.S.
(Turnerville, NJ, if memory serves) announced he was putting
the system on the back burner in favor of programming a new BBS
on the Mac in C (Megamax C, I think it was).  This was before
color Macs.
I think he was not the only one.  Do we count Steve Jobs?
