Have you tried his Zip drive on your system?  That would answer the DOA
question.  Also try the Zip drive on a Mac system if possible.  Perhaps
try a HFS Zip disk too.  He might not have the MSDOS FST installed on his
system.  I don't know how that affects the Finder wrt a Zip disk.

For some reason my systems (Apple HS SCSI cards) work better with the Zip
drive termination set to 'ON' even if it isn't the last device on the
chain.  I haven't figured that one out yet.
