Name patch (was HS.FST patch)
Jeff chanted almost zenlike:
CC(| As no one else seems to have come up with the correct answer for
| you yet, let me help. :)
Hey, I tried... Didn't know about CD-ROaM or Dr. Bazyar proggies, did
know that MS circumvented the 8.3, chr$(32)-illegal limits.
| to start filenames with a number you need to look for a program
| called QFIX. I believe it is still included with the archive for
| 2QWK! if you are having problems finding it. Brian Hammack
| should be able to point you to it at any rate. :)
/me nods
2qwk! should be on the standard FTPs, it's an 8-bit offline QWK reader
and I haven't gone looking for URLs but it is there. It contains a
util called QuickFix (QFIX) which may also be available separately,
which is an updated and automatic version of the NameFix patcher of
years ago. It will patch P8, PRODOS (the 8-bit sys file, not the
16-bit tag in System 6), PRODOS.FST, BASIC.SYSTEM, two files in
ProTerm 3.1, and some other programs to allow "illegal" filenames. The
necessity of this is that this mailreader uses index files for mail
tossing, which have names like 025.NDX so the ability to have
filenames starting with a number is required. The QuickFix patch is
very stable and I've been using it for years without problems; the only
quirk seen is when files have tildes in their names it recasts the
tilde as a carat (PORN~1.JPG online is saved as PORN^1.JPG), all other
MSDOS- legal characters for filenames are supported correctly.
[standard disclaimer: 2qwk!, QFIX, and NameFix were written by Tom
Larson, Lysergic Software. All programs are freeware for the love of
Apple computing, and work on an enhanced //e through GS. Minimum
ProDOS-8 version patchable is 2.0.x, which you should be using anyway.
And if you haven't seen FontPimp, Lysergic's last GS program which
converts PC TrueType files into GS TrueTypes, ask JoKo about it.]
