I have to disagree with you here, Rubywand. It depends what your
other computer is. To us who have Win 95/98 units as "the other
computer," it certainly seems that way. But then again, once you've
seen an AppleTalked IIGS, you may change your mind. I did when
I finally saw one in action.
First: Transfer rate...AppleTalk is 230k while null-modem to a PC is
only 56k.
Second: Convenience. The Mac's hard drive shows up as an icon
on the IIGS Finder desktop. Files can be copied back and forth
with ease. That's a lot easier than jumping into ProTERM or
Spectrum and starting zmodem. It is certainly more convenient.
Comparing AppleTalk to null-modem is like comparing Ethernet to
null-modem. If you have two Win 95/98 units, would you connect
them using null-modem and transfer files with zmodem? Or would
you connect them via Ethernet and have access to hard drives on
the network, copying files to and from.

I did a test with acceleration turned off. Don't know about Spectrum,
but ProTERM 3.1 can manage 57.6k zmodem transfers in either
direction via a null-modem connection WITHOUT an accelerator.
The IIGS never ceases to amaze me. ;-)
