I don't know what the A/B/C/D suffix relates to, but I've heard Apple ][
and ][+ logic boards described in terms of a revision number, with
"revision 7" being the baseline version for the Apple ][+ (eliminating
support for the 4K RAM chips, for example, and always having all three
rows populated).
It seems likely that the 820-0044-C and -D are later than the revision 7
board.
Does anyone have Jim Sather's "Understanding the Apple II" book (from
Quality Software)? There may be an appendix which lists the motherboard
revisions.
I have the IIe version of this book, which doesn't say much about the
earlier machines, but it is the sort of information that might be
included in the earlier edition.
