There is no such thing as an eight and a half inch floppy disk.
The options for floppies are:
Eight inches (8")
Five and a quarter inches (5.25")
Three and a half inches (3.5")
Eight inch drives predate the Apple II, and were rarely if ever used
(possibly with some really early CP/M cards; I've also used them with a
Nestar file server - the disks are still sitting in my cupboard, but are
probably dead by now).
The 5.25" drive is standard for the 8-bit Apple II, and the 3.5" drive
is standard for the Apple IIgs (5.25" can also be used, but is less
common).
Some 3.5" drives can be used on the IIe, given the right combination of
interface card and drive.
