That's good to hear. As you may have already read, I learned
something new today and if you want that 5.25" drive icon to appear
whether or not there is a disk in the 5.25" drive, uncheck the 'Check
5.25" drives on Finder startup" preference and leave the slot setting
for slot 6 set to Disk Port. This way you should always have 5.25"
drive icons on your Finder desktop and you can insert a disk and
double click the icon to read it.

That is supposed to work but I guess because GraphicWriter III is
still using the old style icons, the old style icons must be taking
preference. To use this method you would need to delete the GW.Icons
file and then Control-Option-DoubleClick on a GraphicWriter III
document to set the program to run but this would meant that
GraphicWriter III documents wouldn't have their unique icon anymore.

The other method is to use an old style Finder icon editor like
Iconed, Diced or whatever and change the path to the program for the
GraphicWriter III document icon. I just checked mine and it seems to
think I have my GraphicWriter III installed at
*:GraphicWriter:GraphicWriter when in fact I have it at
:Apps:General:GraphicWriter:GraphicWriter. I'll have to change that
one of these days. :-)
Oh, and don't forget to make sure you only have one old style icon
file that contains a GraphicWriter III document icon. If you have
more than one and don't edit them all, it is possible that this won't
work either because of the order that icons get loaded into memory.
Another method that might be handy would be to delete any and all old
style GW.Icons files from your machine and attached an rBundle to the
GraphicWriter III program. Then the next time you launch it from the
Finder, it will update the Finder's Desktop file and everything will
get set properly. The problem here is constructing an rBundle for use
with GraphicWriter III but it can be done.
