The "module" IS the flyback transformer. It does indeed have a couple of
other functions I didn't mention, generating the filament voltage and
screen voltage. The only way it could affect the vertical circuit while
not affecting the high voltage, filaments, and horizontal sweep (all
required to be functioning to produce a horizontal line) is if the
designer tapped off some AC and rectified it for use in the vertical
circuit. That would be a bad idea, since the circuit already works too
hard, but Apple isn't known for "insanely great" power supply designs! 
Maybe I'll take another look at the circuit board to check out that
possibility.
