Well Ralph,
My search has led me in an interesting direction. First, nobody I've talked
to seems to remember the Apple Computer company's version of AppleLink when
I've asked them if it was graphics or text based. I pulled a little
comp.sys.apple2 email that I saved on the hard drive since October because I
knew that I'd need it someday.
What do you know about "freenets?" I've discovered a bit lately. Enough to
let be know that they're accessible by my Apple IIe, inexpensive (if it's a
local call), and quite well set up (there may be no sense reinventing the wheel
with AppleLink). Los Angeles FreeNet is very impressive. Over 5000 newsgroups
available, CNN updates on the hour, traffic updates, electronic access to
libraries, access to government, global email and much more! It's only $20 a
YEAR, yes, YEAR, for text-based access and double that for www graphics
browsers. It's only 8 years old and is EXPANDING (an upgraded two weeks ago),
so this is a growing system, not one that just hasn't died off yet.
With our smaller Apple II communitee, maybe we should just take advantage of
what others have gone to the trouble of setting up, instead of trying to
resurrect the wheel that was AppleLink? I've found a good starting point for
those interested in checking out their local freenets (mine's almost local,
maybe in a couple of more years it will be moved further out my way). Try:
