Thanks, Beverly!  i'll post here when i have the problem solved....

so far, it looks like the problem might be related to the fact that MY
version of AWGS is a bit old....  1.0v2 as compared to 1.1 ....  :)  it's
been suggested (by Jim P.) that AWGS 1.0 doesn't like GS/OS System 6.0.1.
