GS and Postscript problem?

I occasionally produce a document in AWGS, create a Postscript file,
and then print it at work on an HP LaserJet from a UNIX command line.
In the past, I've used a LJ4 or older, and it's worked well.
Now most of our printers are of the LJ5 SiMX variety. When I tried it
yesterday (it was a page layout document, but I doubt that's
significant), the LJ5 produced an error message and no output. I
finally found an LJ4, and it worked well.
Here's the error message that was printed:
ERROR: invalidaccess
OFFENDING COMMAND: def
STACK:
{abs exch abs 2 copy add 1 gt {1 sub dup mul exch 1 sub dup mul add 1
sub }{dup mul exch dup mul add 1 exch sub }ifelse }

Has anyone seen this sort of problem? Is there a workaround? I'm
afraid the LJ4s will become scarcer and the GS may not be able to
provide me the pretty output I occasionally want.
Thanks,
Bill Harris
