None of our Apple II drives have had the melting belt problem (and
these are pretty old drives). It's something I've noticed in some
equipment. I'll check our C64's 1541 drive later today-- thanks for the
warning!
The ruberband idea has worked for me in replacing belts used in
cassette tape recorders. A reason the rubberband may slip off on your
Atari drive is that it is too tight-- or the band may have a bump in it
or be cut slightly cross-ways.
