ZipGS v 1.0.1 Request for Info/Help
Hi, I am trying to get some-ones ZipGS v 1.0.1 Running with _HIS_GS_.
The Card Works, but he has no software for it.
(e.g. Unable to change the setting, exept via the DipSwitches)
Not good as he is new to the GS. and his son plays games on the GS.

The Guy got the Zip off some-one and they never gave him any software
for it. e.g. the CDA or the Init. So what I am looking for is; if you
know _if_ the software is on any of the A2 archives, and which one`s.
And if there are any conflicts between the ZipGS and the Apple HS SCSI
card I should be looking for .
So far I manage to get the CDA (ZIPCDA v# 1.3) but have not been able to
find ZIPGS.Sys / ZipInit/ ZipTalk (Only needed if your STILL using LESS
than System 6)/ Zippy or ZipFix (You should all have this installed.)

I have a AppleShare Server 3.0.3 running on my MacSE and booting with no
ZipCard On _MYGS_ works fine (:
I would like to try getting my GS with his Zip to boot from my
AppleShare Server 3.0.3 before I reinstall it in the guys GS for his son
to play games with ): So far I have not been able to get it to do so ):
If I boot from a floppy (No ZipCDA) installed. I can connect to my
Server, but if I try to boot (No ZipCDA) off the server directly, it
fails ):
Any suggestions!

1-1 Cxxx/Dxxx Cache Disable. Leave this switch ON (option disabled,
i.e. enable caching of Cxxx/Dxxx).
1-2 Joystick Delay. This will slow the computer down whenever the
joystick is accessed (it is timing critical). I usually leave
this one ON to avoid the delay - most joystick programs have to
run in slow mode anyway, so this delay in useless.
1-3 AppleTalk Delay. This switch should be set ON unless you
are booting from an AppleShare server, or using AppleTalk with
System 5.0.4 or earlier.

AppleTalk or Interrupt Delay should always be disabled. The desktop will
run much slower if you enable it. (requires CPS Follow to be enabled for
the fix to work.)

Because it saps performance every time an interrupt occurs.
The Appletalk delay was originally called the "Interrupt Delay" but they
renamed it at the last minute because (somebody) actually tried an 8/64
on an Appleshare network and it dropped packets like crazy.
With "Appletalk delay" on, every time an interrupt occurs your Zip will
disable acceleration for 5 ms, just like it does with the paddles and
the speaker and the others. This is a significant effect because with
VBL interrupts going you have one every 16 ms, so your Zip spends nearly
1/3 of the time not accelerating you.
Why this "fixes" appletalk: in system 5 and earlier (including the ROM
appletalk code), there are software timing loops which assume 2.8 mhz
operation. As you speed the system up, it gets more and more likely to
drop incoming packets because it thinks they are being sent too slowly
to be correct, when in reality the appletalk code is timing out too
fast.
Why the Appletalk delay is not a complete solution: a full-size
Appletalk packet that you'd get from a file server takes about 14 ms to
transmit. The Appletalk delay covers the first 1/3 of the packet, the
VBL interrupt covers at most another third of the packet, but nothing is
guaranteed to keep acceleration off for the whole packet. If you speed
the Zip up more, say to 10/64, it starts dropping long packets no matter
what.
This latter problem was why I originally wrote ZipTalk. It required a
slot delay to be enabled (in, say, slot 6 or 7), and before each
appletalk packet was received I tweaked that slot -- slot delays are 50
ms, so the Zip stays unaccelerated way past the end of the packet and
everything works. (I also patched packet sending, to be safe.)
In system 6 Apple fixed things correctly in the appletalk drivers. I
removed the code from ZipTalk and released what remained as ZipFix. As
of 6.0.1, the cursor flicker problem was fixed by apple in the control
panel, so now you only need ZipFix for the GS/OS SET_SYS_SPEED hook,
which nobody seems to use.

This is typical, because the bootup code doesn't know how to cope with
the ZIP. Once you have system 6's appletalk drivers loaded, you don't
need the special ZIP settings any more.

1-4 Counter Delay. This switch should be set ON. Its only
documented function is to allow one of the IIgs self tests to
pass, but a later one will fail anyway.
1-5 CPS Follow should always be enabled. If you disable it you will
have problems with Disk ]['s and System 6's AppleTalk driver and
anything else that expects the Zip to slow down to 1 mhz when the
GS is instructed to slow down to 1 mhz.

you have this disabled.

1-6 Disable. The card should normally be enabled (switch ON), but you
can disable it if you want to run some "fast" mode games, for
example.
1-7 and 1-8 control the cache size, which must correspond to the
installed RAM chips. The cache uses matching pairs of TAG and
DATA RAMs. The supported cache sizes are 8k (1-7 ON, 1-8 ON),
16k (1-7 ON, 1-8 OFF), 32k (1-7 OFF, 1-8 ON) and 64k (1-7 OFF,
1-8 OFF).
2-1 through 2-7 control slot delays for each slot from 1 to 7. Set
the switch OFF to enable the delay for the corresponding slot.
This is generally only needed for a small number of cards that
are speed critical but not IIgs-aware. 5.25" disk interface
cards are covered by the CPS FOLLOW option (1-5) if they are in
slots 4 to 7.
I have found that it is necessary to enable the delay for slot 6
when using a 3.5" drive connected to the IIgs disk port. There
are a few rare cases in which a long timed operation is performed
in fast mode, and the ZIP throws the timing out unless this delay
is enabled. In my case, I had some strange disk errors with
certain disks until I enabled this delay.
2-8 Speaker Delay. This causes the IIgs to slow down whenever the
speaker is accessed directly, allowing sounds to come out
normally.
