I don't think so, because my digital 6-button joystick worked fine; it was just
a bit sluggish, and that can be fixed my changing the capacitance values on the
adaptor.  My PC Gamepad *completely* freaked out my ROM 01, though.  It would
work if I connected it after boot up, still as sluggishly as the 6-button
version, but if it was connected during a cold boot, the GS went into self-test
mode!  And interestingly, everything tested okay... :)

I'd guess it depends on the model of the stick.
