Thanks for the info. I think bad contact could be the problem so I'll try
the re-socking fix first.

This is a good description of what I see on the ][gs screen at start-up:

The problem is the text is just blocks of color not letters. and the "ball
that seems to roll up" looks more like and LED meter on screen. And no
beep start-up sound. I don't have a hard drive does it make the "beep"
without one?
