Hi Apple Faithful,
I'm rather desperate for solutions to what should be very simple
challenges... I've tried the obvious and put way more time into this old
Mac than it's worth, but I just don't want to give up on it! (Perhaps
you understand!)
Background:
I have an old Quadra 610. It spent a long time as my personal at home
workhorse, and has photoshop on it, etc., and I've used it to publish a
small non-profits magazine... In recent times I was forced by
circumstance (work) to use an NT system at home. I'll spare you details
of the long story, but it's important to know that the system was
partially lobotomized, and I don't know why or how -- someone has told
me it was most likely Nortons disk utilities that did it... The result
is that I lost Netscape, and many important utilities such as FTP.
Overall Goals:
It's time to make use of this system again. I want to get my large
magazine images off and archive them via the CDRW I have on my NT
system. I then want to put Netscape back on it and at least a modicum of
tools. I then want to give it to my Gates-Hating friend who wants to
surf the web, etc.
The System and its present environ:
The system is a Quadra 610 with 24MB ram and presently has MacOS 7.5.1
on it. It has the usual complement of Appletalk and ethernet hardware on
board. It also has an external SCSI (ancient type) hard disk of some
very modest size. Other than the standard internal disk and removable
floppy, there are no other media attached. The system sits among two NT
systems, one with 'Workstation' and the other with 'Server.' There's a
10-Base T hub, and I have all the necessary transceivers, wiring, etc.,
to hook em up - I even have a 'crossover' cable for the 10-BaseT... The
Mac purports to talk both TCP and Appletalk, and will connect to the
internet via a PPP connection, but can't any longer talk to anything,
though I didn't yet try the latest version of Fetch.
Where I'm in need of HELP! ...
1) I desperately want to off-load my non-profits magazine images. I have
spent _days_ trying to get the Mac to talk to my NT systems, with no
success. The best I can get is the transceiver lights blinking from the
Mac end, and transmit blinking on the NT end, but never receive on the
NT end and never is there a successful connection. The closest I get to
a real connection seems to be "connection refused." (Harumph.) I have
primarily tried TCP because I haven't even the slightest clue as to how
to get NT to recognize the Appletalk environment, even though it _says_
Appletalk is loaded successfully and up and running. I guess I need to
declare some kind of Zone, but have no idea how do to that!
(It's impractical to upload and then download my images as there are a
couple of hundred megabytes of data there!)
2) Finding the software: I'm advised I should put 7.6 on it but NOT 8.0.
I have visited the BMUG users group this last week, but few were in that
evening. I got a copy of Fetch 3. something, and as the system can still
connect to the internet with PPP so I can down load stuff. But my local
vendors the BMUG pointed me to don't have 7.6 any more?! Where/how can I
get this and what about Netscape
...ANY AND ALL HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!... If you're local to Oakland
CA, I'll gladly provide a home-cooked Cajun meal, or other suitable
treat. Or I'd even consider paying for help...
Please EMAIL a reply (as well as replying to the wg, as you wish).
Regards, and thanks in advance,
