IIGS INTERNAL POWER SUPPLY: WHAT PARTS FAIL WHEN THE
POWER SUPPLY QUITS?
The latest Bugg-Power buyer took advantage of my "trade-in" credit
offer: He sent me his dead internal power supply and got a $6.00
credit/discount towards a bugg-power. (198 Bugg-Power units have now been
shipped, since April 1996.)
His internal p.s. was indeed dead --- no voltages on any lines.
Today I transferred the innards (i.e., motherboard) from a IIe/II+ p.s.
into this IIgs p.s. casing. Its the second time I've done this
"transplant" operation and it WORKS. The unit is running a IIgs in the
garage now. I've also installed a "Crow Fred" IIgs cooler fan on the
round opening of the "resurrected" IIgs internal power supply. This
transplant will probably be fine for a IIgs that has few or an average
number of interface cards.
FIXING THE DEAD IIGS INTERNAL POWER SUPPLY MOTHERBOARD: I regret
that I don't know enough about electronics to truly trouble-shoot the dead
p.s. motherboard --- I'm basically a component-swapper. But the dead p.s.
board _looks_ absolutely perfect: fuse is good, all components look and
smell good (no odor of cooked electronics), etc. I will probably salvage
some components from this unit ----- but it ought to be REPAIRED! Can
anyone give trouble-shooting advice? I.e., what will go wrong to
eliminate the output, if the fuse remains good?
There are two brands of IIgs internal p.s.: Dynacomp (brushed
aluminum casing), and Astec (steel casing). This unit is Dynacomp ---- as
was also the first unit that I did the "IIe p.s. transplant." A few years
ago, someone wrote on this net that one of the two brands is repairable,
but the other is not. Which p.s. brand can be fixed? Why cannot the
other be fixed??
Finally, I can do the IIe p.s. "transplant" for others. Its a
2-for-1 dead-for-live swap, if I must supply the IIe p.s. Its a 1.5-for-1
swap if YOU send a working IIe internal p.s. with your dead IIgs units.
Bye, "Solder Steve" Buggie
