Right; you are talking about a IIgs case. (When you mentioned
preserving the logo, I switched to thinking in terms of the logo plates
in the II, II+, and earlier IIe style cases.)
It is not clear what part of the logo would be left to protect on
other A2 cases painted black. The little Apple symbol is some kind of
insert on the IIgs case; but, it looks like it would be difficult to
remove without damaging it.
If the painter-owner left the front panel of the IIgs case alone,
my inclination would be to give George's "GoJer" (or whatever) hand
cleaner method a try.
If the hand cleaner does not work or if the whole thing is painted
except for the Apple symbol, protecting the symbol with tape and
repainting looks like the best solution. Lettering could be added later
via rub-on letters or you could use the "Apple Computer" part of the
clear decals-- i.e. your case would say "Apple Computer" instead of
"Apple IIGS".
If everything is painted including the Apple symbol, it's probably
too late to save any part of the logo. _Maybe_, with some lubricant type
cleaner, a flat wooden stylus could be used to scrape away paint from
the symbol and even the lettering on the case.
One option for getting a fresh logo and name is the insert used
when IIe's were converted to IIgs's. Someone may have one of these to
sell. You could apply it to a IIgs case using double-sided tape.
